54 in fredericksburg. hagerstown at 53 degrees this morning. so certainly some cool air in place that will wake you up when you step outside. nothing to see on the sat- rad except the moon, stars and sun. it will be a very, very pretty day with abundant sunshine once again. here is your forecast then for today. it look like this. plenty of sunshine, another nice afternoon. high right around 80 degrees. that is the weather. we'll have more coming up in just a little bit. >> sounds good. >> let's check in with julie wright. she has the latest on traffic for us. >> if you are traveling northbound i-95 north of i-195 but before you reach 695, that is where we had the accident activity tying up the two right lanes. georgia accident at -- georgia avenue at norbeck, they were checking for an dent here. 395 across the 14th street bridge being lanes are open. no incidents to report crossing

the potomac river. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. our big story, repealing don't ask, don't tell. later today, the senate is going to vote on the pentagon's policy. for more, we turn to fox 5's stacy cohan live on capitol hill this morning. >> reporter: good morning. both president obama and the defense secretary robert gates do support ending the don't ask don't tell policy but the big question here on capitol hill is how will the senators vote. don't ask don't tell allows gays and lesbians to serve in the military but not openly. in may of this year, the house of representatives voted to repeal the ban. now, it is the septa's turn. the legislation attached to the defense authorization bill upsetting groups would don't want gays to serve openly in the military. >> the individual senators and how they vote on this motion to proceed is something they will be held accountable for.

>> reporter: at a news conference of christian leader into his washington, tony perkins urged senators to leave the law alone. >> in this fails tomorrow, the pressure will continue. >> reporter: those who want the policy overturned say more than 13,000 homosexual service members have been fired six don't ask, don't tell became law. >> i wanted to serve my country. i'm able to serve my country. i was great at what i did. it makes no sense to discharge me base based on sexual orientation. >> reporter: the pentagon is in the middle of an in-house survey to see whether allowing gays to serve openly would hurt. >> even then, it was not an issue. i was open relatively to my peers. everyone knew. it was not a problem whatsoever. >> reporter: he is lobbying to get don't ask don't tell repealed. >> so even as open as i was able to be, there was a level of paranoia that constantly existed that made it impossible to maintain a career in the

military. >> i am here today because i >> reporter: at an afternoon repeal it rally in portland, main main, lady yi gaga trying to get that state's two republican senators to switch sides. >> but i'm more concerned that john mccain and other republican senators are using homophobia as a defense in their arguments. >> reporter: the vote today isn't just on the don't ask, don't tell policy. that policy has been inserted into the much larger military authorization bill. those in support of repealing the policy need 60 votes in the senate today. reporting live on capitol hill, i'm stacy cohan. back to you. >> thank you. a three-month-long investigation has led to the arrest of a lorton, virginia man. he is accused of possessing child pornography. police were tipped off by firefighters actually about the pornographic material in 51- year-old mark barget's home. they went into his home to make

boy to his home, showed him pornography and touched him. he was immediately fired. d.c. police have a person of interest in the murder of a 21-year-old woman. ashley mccray was found shot to death early saturday morning. police are focusing on an argument as the motive for the murder. mccray attended booker t. washington charter school and was taking chass at devry university. authorities need your help tracking down the person seen here allegedly robbing a restaurant. investigators suspect he is responsible for at least 40 restaurant robberies. the string of robberies began last february. police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. a secret satellite launch three years in the making. plus a deadly helicopter crash in a violent part of afghanistan. we'll have more on your headlines coming up next. plus, some good news for victims of the gulf of mexico

chopper crash in afghanistan. nato says nine coalition soldiers were killed when their helicopter went down in southern afghanistan but we don't yet know where they were from. there was one american civilian on board and one afghan army soldier on board. they are recovering at a military hospital this morning. the pilot of a small plane was forced to make an emergency landing on i georgia highway. he said he had just taken off from thor port when his engine quit so he took aim at the southbound lanes of the interstate right in the middle of rush hour traffic. the faa says no one was hurt. traffic was backed up for miles as crews hauled away the plane on a flatbed truck. the air force launch as a secret satellite. a rocket carrying classified cargo lifted off from vandenberg air force base last night. the rocket has a payload from the military national reconnaissance office but no details on what the satellite can do or who it can spy on.

degrees. we'll see similar temperatures today. maybe tack on a degree or two here or there but generally seeking, similar temperatures across the region. our current temperatures look like this. they are all over the place. 40s, 50s, 60s. right now, 49 degrees at dulles. 62 in annapolis. quantico, 54 degrees. salisbury at 53 degrees at this hour. here also look at the satellite- radar composite for the region. not much so show you as there is no cloud cover this morning. we have clear skies. saw a bright moon out there earlier this morning. we will get the sun breaking out. it will be bright sunshine. those of you heading east on your commute this morning, you may encounter some sunshine delays once that gets going during the 7:00 hour. all right. now, let's take a look at the forecast for today. it is a simple one and a good

after riding a couple of miles on the bike. >> reporter: it is a new concept here. the district has had a bike sharing program since 2007. we found considerable interest across from the crystal city metro there are all kind of benefits for a program like this one. the first 0 minutes of each trip are free and everybody like a freebie. you have to be a member. you can join online and ride for one day one month or one year. >> i wanted to go town the street right now onto 2rd street and get lunch, i could see myself possibly hopping on the bike, biking over there and get lunch and biking back. >> reporter: you can ride from virginia along the mount vernon trail, past the airport to the national mall or just down the street and around the corner and you don't have to be a cyclist to appreciate the system. >> caring about our community and wanting us to be more

northbound leaving springfield headed up towards the capital beltway. all lanes are open working out towards duke street. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. this morning's big story is ending don't ask don't tell. the septa will take up the military's policy on gay soldiers today. we get more from stacy cohan who is live on capitol hill this morning. >> reporter: good morning. the military's don't ask don't tell policy does allow gay and lesbians to serve in the military but they may not serve openly. congress first passed that law in 1993. that was under president bill clinton. a repeal is part of the military authorization bill that the senate is set to vote on today. at a news conference, christian leaders urged senators not to pass this. the family research council is asking that it would put some military men and women in an awkward situation. however, former gay soldiers disagree. >> i wanted to seven my country. i'm able to serve my country. i was great at what i did. it make no sense that you

you approach route 7 in tyson's, we do have accident activity on both the left and right side of the highway. expect delays headed north from 66. outer loop. the beltway, no problems reported leaving college park as you travel through silver spring. all of the lanes are open towards the exit for 270. heading south on 270, we have the accident activity blocking the right lane. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. the latest now in the battle against alzheimer's disease. researchers have zeroed in on a protein that appears to signal how aggressive the mind- crippling disease will be. they found that patients with mild alzheimer's had high levels of that protein also harbored a genetic alteration that predicted that mayor minds would deteriorate more quickly than others. researchs are say finding a way to lower the level of this particular protein could be a promising approach for people would suffer from alzheimer's now or possibly in the future.
